In Missouri, Bill Shaver decided to take a fishing trip. On the way back home, he had to stop for a bathroom break at a rest stop. And because he knew he would only be gone for a minute or two, he left his car unlocked. And he also left the driver’s side door ajar.

When Bill returned to his car, he found that he had some new company. A stray pup decided to jump into the car and was waiting for him when he returned. The female pup was obviously malnourished, and Bill became very concerned for her. So he gave her the only thing he had left to eat, a Rice Krispie bar. It was gone in seconds. She was starving.

Bill made sure the pup had no family looking for her in the rest stop area. Then, he took a picture of her and sent it to his wife, Angela, letting her know that the pup was coming home with him. Bill and his wife had often taken in stray animals and took care of them, so this was really nothing new for the couple.

Angela, of course, instantly agreed to taking in the dog and nursing her back to health. After a few hours, Bill and his new companion were back home. She was very hesitant about leaving the car, because that’s where she found her new buddy. But she finally gave in. They then introduced the dog to their other animals.

Says Angela: “Once they all decided she was OK, Bill brought her in for a bath. She was covered in mud, blood and ticks. After she was dried off and some ticks picked off, she got a good meal. Bill made her a bed on the floor in our room next to the space heater. She slept there all night.”

They named her “River,” because she had hitched a ride with Bill while he was at a rest stop near a river. With their newest addition, the Shavers have 5 rescue dogs and a rescue cat. The day after Bill brought her home, River started exploring her new surroundings. Bill and Angela also let her outside for awhile to get used to the location. And it didn’t take too long for River to settle in with all the others.

A day later, she was taken to the veterinarian. There was nothing life-threatening, and, after getting some medication, it didn’t take too much longer before River was a hundred percent.

River now loves her new life, and she certainly loves all the loving attention she receives. And her entire life changed when she decided to catch a ride with a stranger.
