When his son decided to settle down in Pennsylvania after finishing college, a father from New Jersey bought a four-bedroom house as a considerate gift for him.
John, who worked long hours commuting from New Jersey to Manhattan, regarded it as an investment and a means to stay in touch with his son Mark.
John was responsible for the house’s taxes, services, and maintenance, and the arrangement worked well at first. Mark was responsible for everything else.
Before Mark met Lisa, the love of his life, and made the decision to make the house in Pennsylvania their shared home, life was smooth.
Everything was going swimmingly for the young couple—they seemed to fit in with each family—until they became engaged and the subject of their wedding arose.
The drama starts
To ensure that both families could meet and celebrate the engagement in a suitable manner, a “get to know you” barbecue was hosted at the Pennsylvania residence. At first, it looked like the event was going swimmingly.
Nevertheless, things became worse when Mark, the bride-to-be, her mother and sisters, John’s wife and daughter, and the bride-to-be’s father all showed up to the house at the same time.
As soon as they entered, John’s wife and daughter came out, very distressed, and said they were leaving right away to return to New Jersey. They wouldn’t say why they were suddenly so unhappy.
As he mentioned in his Reddit post, John chose to drive his wife and children back to New Jersey instead of continuing to pursue the issue.
He found out why they had to go so quickly once they had a chance to gather themselves.
Little did John’s wife and daughter know that the bride-to-be’s family had informed them while they were inside the house that they were not “their kind of people” and had thus excluded them from the wedding.
This news horrified John, so he reached out to Mark to talk about it.
According to his son, Lisa’s family felt his family wouldn’t be invited because they were embarrassed by their socioeconomic status.
John traveled from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to meet with Mark face-to-face after taking a brief break to collect himself.
When he arrived, he was shocked and disappointed to see an unexpected circumstance.
John’s unwelcome surprise
John was taken aback to discover Lisa and her family living in his Pennsylvania house when he arrived. Mark was apparently not informed or asked for permission before they moved in.
The man told Lisa’s relatives that he needed to have a conversation with his son regarding the wedding plans when they questioned him about his presence.
Their demand that he vacate the premises prompted him to make a pivotal choice. His story was:
“I lost it and told them that they had 30 days to get out. Tell my son I’m selling the house, and he could find somewhere else to live with all of you. I go to a realtor in town and list the house for sale.”
This was completed without Mark’s knowledge or consent.
Actually, Lisa chose to notify Mark at work by calling him. She thought he, and not his father, should have been the one to own the house.
When Mark heard the news, he called his dad to find out more about the house sale.
John told his son that he was to vacate the house, even though he was living there for free, because he had decided to cut himself off from the family.
According to John, his family was no longer given the attention they deserved because his in-laws had taken over.
After that, John served Mark, Lisa, and Lisa’s relatives with a 30-day notice to leave the property, as well as a threat to involve legal counsel if required.
Supporters of John’s decision to kick Mark and Lisa out of the house, along with Lisa’s boorish relatives, were numerous on Reddit.
