In late May, the Humane Society of Lebanon County (HSLC) in Pennsylvania received an urgent call from local police and fire rescue about a dog trapped inside a storm drain.
At first glance, responders feared the worst—the dog appeared lifeless. But as they removed the grate, the frail animal slowly lifted his head, revealing he was still hanging on.
A dedicated volunteer and a staff member from the shelter rushed to the scene, bracing themselves for the worst after receiving the distressing report. Nothing could have fully prepared them for what they were about to witness. What they found was truly heartbreaking—a helpless animal left in deplorable conditions, the pain and fear evident in its eyes. The scene was a stark reminder of the cruelty some animals endure, and it strengthened their resolve to intervene and offer the care and compassion that had been so cruelly denied.
The elderly dog had curled into a tight ball, weak and on the brink of death. Carefully, they pulled him from the drain and rushed him to an emergency veterinarian for immediate care.
It didn’t take long to identify the dog. His name was Buddy, a 15-year-old who had been missing for three weeks. His family was contacted, but despite efforts to reunite them, it became clear that Buddy’s needs now had to come first.
Buddy spent three days receiving critical care, slowly regaining strength. Though his condition improved, his age and health complications meant he wasn’t out of the woods.
Buddy still faces follow-up appointments, including ultrasounds, x-rays, and a visit to an ophthalmologist. Due to his age, sedation is risky, making a calm, loving foster home the best option for his recovery.
The shelter is committed to covering all of Buddy’s medical care, food, and supplements. What he needs now is a patient foster who can offer him a quiet place to rest and heal.
