Kate Middleton’s appearance at Trooping the Color was a joy for royal fans worldwide, but mainly for the princess herself. It was her first public appearance since last year after undergoing abdominal surgery and cancer treatment, but it is unclear how much Kate will be seen in public in the coming months.

While Kate Middleton smiled and waved to the exciting crowd along the streets of London, she was not supposed to be the center of attention. Trooping the Color celebrates the monarch’s official birthday. According to a body language expert, that was what Kate was well aware of, and she made sure not to take too much space.

Even though she seemed to be doing great, royal expert Katie Nicholl paints another picture. According to the expert, Kate Middleton was not fully fit, and one specific moment proved it.

On Friday, June 14, just a day before Trooping the Color, Kate Middleton announced her royal comeback.

Kate Middleton – royal comeback

In a lengthy statement, the Princess of Wales confirmed that she would attend the Trooping the Colour, which would be her first royal appearance since her abdominal surgery.

“I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months. It really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times,” Kate said.

The Princess of Wales continued: “I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”

“My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months. On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.”

“I’m looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet.”

Kate Middleton concluded: “I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal. Thank you so much for your continued understanding, and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me.”

“There are signs that her happiness is genuine”

A cheering audience met Kate Middleton as she rode in a carriage with her children. However, although she looked happy, one body language expert argued that the princess was “nervous” and took things slow.

Royal expert Inbaal Honigman told the Daily Star: “Princess Catherine’s closed-mouth smile as she arrives in the car with her family indicates that she is being cautious.”

“Compared with previous years, where the Princess would flash a wholehearted, toothy smile of happiness, this occasion reveals a more careful Catherine, smiling with her lips, cheeks and eyes, but not with her teeth. This demonstrates caution, but there are signs that her happiness is genuine.”

The body language expert concluded: “The raised eyebrows when she smiles, suggest that she is happy, even excited, and as she peeks out of the car, we can see that she’s glad to connect with the expecting crowds outside. Her shoulders are slightly raised, which suggests that she’s nervous.”

The balcony appearance during Trooping the Colour has always been an extraordinary moment, both for the royals and gathered members of the public.

Royal expert says Prince William and Kate Middleton are “stronger than ever”

Kate Middleton walked out on the balcony together with Prince William and her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, and of course, King Charles and Queen Camilla, among some other royal family members, were there.

The Princess of Wales has not been alone in this challenging time. Prince William has taken on a massive responsibility for George, Charlotte, and Louis while simultaneously performing his royal duties.

The pictures on the balcony spoke for themselves. William and Kate were smiling at each other, and according to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, it painted an obvious picture. They have not only made it through a very challenging period but also have hopes for a bright future.

“The last few months have been a test of their strong partnership,” Bond told OK! Magazine. “I think this photograph tells us that they are still able to jump for joy, even in the toughest of times, and that Kate has deliberately chosen a picture that speaks of their optimism for the future.”

“She adores William – he is her rock and has supported her so selflessly through all of this and has taken flak from members of the public for not doing more and for devoting himself to her. So she adores her man. I think their marriage is stronger than ever.”

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – JUNE 15: (EMBARGOED FOR PUBLICATION IN UK NEWSPAPERS UNTIL 24 HOURS AFTER CREATE DATE AND TIME) Prince William, Prince of Wales (Colonel of the Welsh Guards) and Catherine, Princess of Wales watch an RAF flypast from the balcony of Buckingham Palace after attending Trooping the Colour on June 15, 2024 in London, England. Trooping the Colour, also known as The King’s Birthday Parade, is a military ceremony to mark the official birthday of the British Sovereign. The ceremony takes place at Horse Guards Parade followed by a flypast over Buckingham Palace and was first performed in the mid-17th century during the reign of King Charles II. Jennie Bond continued, describing William’s commitment to Kate as a “great accolade.”

Body language expert revealed details about Kate Middleton’s balcony appearance

While the future king has received some criticism over how he has behaved after his wife’s cancer diagnosis, Bond says it all comes down to the fact that he is one hundred percent dedicated to his wife.

“It’s a great accolade to a person to have your partner who has such a public role but any partner just say ‘OK, I don’t care what people say, you are my priority,” she concluded. “William has made it absolutely clear that Kate and the children are his number one priority and nothing is going to move him away from that path.”

It had been long since the public saw their beloved princess and future queen before her Trooping the Colour appearance. Kate’s smiling and waiving, at least, show that she is on her way to fully recover. Also, her body language during Trooping the Colour gave some hints into her well-being.

Body language expert Judi James told The Sun that the Princess of Wales was elegant and calm. Moreover, she argued that it was clear that Kate didn’t want to be the center of attention.

“In a tradition created by her husband’s granny, Kate’s body language here showed the world what being a royal is all about: elegant, calm, and stoic with not one smallest jot of self-pity or drama,” Judi James told The Sun.

“Kate’s non-verbal messages seem to signal a smiling determination to reassure the public and her own children and to get on with the job. She made it clear in her written message that this is a step towards a return, not the start of it but even from the glimpses of her in the carriage her upright back and her signature smile showed a desire to show resilience and poise.”

Royal expert says royal appearance has ‘taken its toll’ on Kate Middleton’s health

James added, “Her wave to the crown involved closed rather than spread fingers and it was a quick, subtle movement of acknowledgement, again suggesting a desire to avoid stealing the attention on the celebration of the King’s birthday.”

Kate Middleton hasn’t given many updates on her recovery from cancer treatment. The mid-March statement about her diagnosis was one, but since then, we’ve only heard directly from her about attending Trooping the Color.

Exactly how she is doing is unknown. However, according to royal expert Katie Nicholl, the princess has not fully recovered, as she reportedly sat down when she could.

Moreover, Nicholl claimed that Kate MIddleton felt she needed to be there.

“The princess has this sort of swan-like quality about her — she’s sort of gliding on the surface — but beneath the water, I think often she’s paddling quite frantically,” Katie Nicholl told ET Online. “I can only imagine that a huge amount of preparation and time and effort and energy will have gone into Saturday’s appearance.”

“She was on her feet for a long period of time. There was a moment where she was watching the parade… and was offered a seat, which she gratefully accepted. That’s just a bit of an acknowledgment that she is not as strong, not as fit, as she was before she went into this treatment.”

“She felt very much that she needed to be there”

“I think a day like Saturday, where she knows the eyes of the world are on her, there is a huge amount of scrutiny that will take its toll,” Katie Nicholl continued. “I think we can probably imagine that she probably had a long and well-deserved rest afterward. I don’t think we can expect to see her in public for a little while. That’s going to take some recovery from.”

She concluded, “I think she felt very much that she needed to be there. The children looked so happy and relaxed having their mother there… It was important, I think, for the Princess of Wales to be there to support her father-in-law, to be there for her family, and to be there for the nation to send out a really important message that she’s doing OK.”
